Berent Roed
January 8, 1916 – August 3, 2008
ANTLER
- Berent Roed, of rural Antler, passed away at a nursing home in Mohall on
Sunday, August 3, 2008.
Berent Roed was born in Staarheim, Norway on January 8, 1916 and grew up on a small farm with four brothers and one sister.
Berent went to work on a silver-fox farm when he was 15 years old. He gave his life to Jesus when he was 18 years old and served the Lord faithfully for 74 years!
Berent went to sea shortly before Germany invaded and occupied Norway during WWII. Since he couldn’t return home until after the war, his ship traveled in large convoys between the United States, Canada, England and South America. The cargo they carried was usually food, oil or ammunition. Many ships were lost to German torpedoes and bombs during every trip across the Atlantic.
Berent returned to New York after the war and met Thelma in the Youth Group of the 59th Street Lutheran Brethren Church in Brooklyn. They were married on May 13, 1950 and made their home on Long Island, NY until 1973 where Berent worked as a carpenter laying oak floors in houses and apartments. Berent and Thelma helped start the Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church in Huntington, Long Island, where Berent served as a Trustee and Sunday school teacher for many years. Since then, they have lived in Norway, Florida, and Arizona. They moved to rural Antler, ND in June 2005 and Thelma went home to be with Jesus on November 23, 2005.
Family: Berent is survived by his three children and their families: Kenneth and Darlyne (Peterson) Roed, Laila (Roed) Fick, Timothy Fick, and Kathy (Roed) and Morgan Isch; grandchildren Kristine (Roed) and Jonathan Butts, David and Brandi (Kizzer) Roed, Jeremy and Christopher Fick and Jennifer and Tracy Isch; great-grandchildren Joshua, Abigail and Caleb Butts and Emma Roed.
