Frederick Mau
He was born October 21, 1924, in Tolley, to August and Anna (Schmidtpott) Mau. He attended the Roosevelt Township School and graduated from Tolley High School in 1942. Fred served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WW II from December 1943 to March 1946. Fred and Evelyn See were married December 5, 1946, in Denver, CO. They operated a neighborhood grocery store in Denver from 1946 to 1949. They moved to the Mohall area and began farming in 1949. He discontinued farming in 1969, but maintained his farming interests. He began working as a clerk for the Mohall Post Office in 1964, and as a rural mail carrier from 1969 until retiring in 1985. Fred and Evelyn moved to Mouse River Park in 2004, and moved to Minot in 2009. Fred was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall; served as co-chairman of the North Central Good Samaritan Nursing Home advisory board from 1977 to 1983 and was the Mohall Municipal Judge for eight years. He was a past president of the Big 4 Rural Carriers, was a life member of the Minot Elks, a life member and 20-year board member of the George T. Taylor American Legion Post #52, Mohall, Mohall Post Commander, Commander of the 6th District, Western Region Vice Commander and Western Region Executive Committee Man, and a Past member of the ND Veterans Coordinating Council. He received the Mr. District Commander Award and Achievement Award from the National American Legion. He was also an honorary member of the Mohall FFA Chapter. Fred and Evelyn traveled extensively around the U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico and much of Canada. Travelling in their motor home was a highlight of their travels. They took many trips; to Disney World, Mt. Rushmore, the Florida Keys, Alaska, Nova Scotia, down the eastern seaboard, Arizona and Texas for the winter months, and at Mouse River Park for the summer. Fred loved to fish and be on the water. The walleye had to be clever to avoid his hook. Fred and Evelyn loved traveling to watch their grandkids do their things: track meets in blizzards, hard bleachers for basketball, diving, football and hockey (a sport he did not understand). Fred loved to garden, play cards and eat oysters on the half-shell with lots of horseradish.
