R. Lynn Witteman
Lynn was born on June 27, 1921 in Hoffman Township, Bottineau County, a son of Richard (Dick) and Ruth (Linder) Witteman. He grew up on his parents’ farm and graduated from the eighth grade at Perry School in Hoffman Township. He attended high school in Mohall and graduated from Mohall High School in 1938. He worked at a Mohall hardware store for one year after high school. He attended North Dakota State in Fargo from the fall of 1939 until June of 1942. He joined the United States Army Air Forces in October of 1942. Having taken a government-sponsored flying course while in college, he became an instructor of instrument flying on a ground trainer during World War II. He was fortunate to remain an instructor at the stateside training command and never served overseas. After being mustered out of service in March of 1946, he came home to the farm to help his parents. After a courtship with Marylou Gehringer, they were married in November of 1948. Together they raised six children on the farm. They retired from active farming in 1979. Lynn was an active musician. His first public performance was at age 8 as part of Organ’s Perry Kiddies, a school-sponsored dance band. He later formed his own group, Lynn’s Legion Band which entertained enthusiastic audiences at the Mohall Legion Club for many years. Making music with his family was one of his greatest pleasures. During his lifetime he held positions in various organizations and community groups. He declined to have them listed. Instead, he wishes to be remembered by and for his family.
