Sylvester Mickanin
He was born November 26, 1914, in McKeesport, PA, a son of Stephen and Anna (Disco) Mickanin. He was raised on a farm near there and attended school there. He married Irene Balego September 16, 1941. He entered the U.S. Army March 28, 1942. He was a Private First Class with Headquarters Plotting Company 582nd Signal Warning Battalion. He served in Sicily, Naples, Rome, Normandy, northern and southern France, Rhineland and central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with six Bronze Stars and one Bronze Arrowhead. He was honorably discharged October 11, 1945. Sylvester returned to Pennsylvania and worked for Westinghouse for many years as a photographer. Irene died in October of 1984. During his retirement years, he lived in Pennsylvania, Ohio and North Dakota. Sylvester was a member of St. Philomena Catholic Church, Glenburn. He loved the rolling plains of North Dakota, gardening, playing the violin, occasional trips to the casino and building model airplanes. He had a large collection which he donated to the Dakota Territory Air Museum. Family: daughter, Charlotte (Chester) Michaleski, Orwell, OH; son, Sylvester Sal Mickanin, Jr.; grandchildren, Michael (Tina) Jurick, Trafford, PA; Ronald (Rae) Jurick, Upham; Jenifer (Stephen) Wogen, Towaco, NJ, Craig Mickanin, Hopkinton, MA, and C.J. Michaleski, Columbus, OH; nine great-grandchildren; and brother, Clifford (Bernice) Mickanin, Irwin, PA. Sylvester was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and son-in-law, Steven R. Jurick.
