Bernadine Helen (Schatz) Schiele, 94, Mohall, formerly of the Karlsruhe area, went to heaven on Monday, July 24, 2023, where she was reunited with her husband, Jerome.
Bernadine was born September 28, 1928, in Drake, to Clemence and Margaret (Bartsch) Schatz. She was the second-eldest of six. Bernadine was always proud of being the Balfour High School homecoming queen, and always had the picture available for proof.
Bernadine and Jerome Schiele were united in marriage on October 26, 1948. They established a farm through love and hard work just south of Karlsruhe. When they were first married, she planted lilac bushes around what someday became their new dream home.
Bernadine and Jerome raised four children. They were involved with their children's lives and activities. She was an outstanding seamstress, sewing cheering uniforms, school clothes, prom dresses, bridesmaid's dresses and whatever the children and grandchildren requested.
She was known for her baking, topping the list were caramel rolls and buns. Bernadine and Jerome were crafty; he would make the items from wood and she would paint and stain.
Bernadine had her humorous moments, too. She once put on a Santa suit to scare her two oldest grandsons into behaving, only to fall in a snowbank. And also the time she beat a rooster with a 2x4 that was chasing Bonnie.
The highlights of Bernadine's life were spending time with her family and friends. She attended as many activities as she was able. She and Jerome enjoyed playing Bingo. We often heard of the winnings and only one number away. They played pinochle often with Bernadine's sisters and spouses. You could stop over anytime for coffee and cookies; they were always ready for company. Bernadine was always ready with polished nails and her hair fixed in case Jerome said, "Let's go to town."
At the time of her passing, she was under the loving care of her angels on earth at Prairie Home and Health LLC, in Mohall. Bonnie, her daughter, was with her at the time of her passing as they listened to German gospel music and a tape of her sister, Leona, and herself singing German songs. During Bernadine's struggles with Alzheimer's disease, she often found comfort in songs from the Lawrence Welk show and German songs. She loved music.
