MOHALL - Denell "Denny" Rexford Osterberg, 89, Minot, formerly of Mohall, died Sunday, November 26, 2023, at a Minot assisted living facility.
He was born August 1, 1934, in Mohall, to Bernard and Ragna (Aalund-LaViolet) Osterberg. He started his life on the Osterberg homestead west of Mohall. His younger years were difficult but it never slowed him down. Denny was not a fan of school but he loved to farm and, like a sponge, he soaked up all the farming knowledge he could from the Osterberg family.
His love of horses came from his dad, Bernard. Bernard had a knack with horses, and Denny spent as much time with his dad and the horses as he possibly could. When Bernard left the Osterberg homestead, Denny's uncle Edwin took him under his wing and they farmed and ranched together.
While farming with Edwin Osterberg, Denny met Rose Gilbertson. She fell for his charms and they were married July 26, 1953. Denny and Rosie raised seven children on the family farm west of Mohall.
Denny farmed and raised all kinds of animals with Rosie for 70 years. The animals he most enjoyed were his registered Belgian draft horses. He raised, trained and pulled them for many years. He served as the Draft Horse Association president from 2002 to 2006. He was very honored with that distinction.
Denny was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall, and Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tolley. He was honored with the Renville-Bottineau Agricultural Improvement Association Pioneer Award.
Family: Wife of 70 years, Rosie Osterberg, Minot; children, Anthony "Tony" (Karen) Osterberg, Minot, Scott (LaVonne) Osterberg, Tolley, Cathy Osterberg, Minot, Denice Osterberg, Deering, Ronda (Carl) Zeltinger, Kenmare; 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; sisters, Donna Walsh, Ellensburg, WA, JoAnn Raivo, Spearfish, SD; brother, Jerry LaViolet, Lakeside, OR; and numerous nieces and nephews.
