Frederick Carl "Fred" Johnson, 87, rural Carpio, died Thursday, May 21, 2020, at his home.
He was born June 22, 1932, in Donnybrook, a son of Emerald and Wilma (Pullen) Johnson.  He attended a rural township school and graduated from Donnybrook High School in 1950.  During his high school days, he played basketball, football, and pitched a no-hitter on the baseball team.
Fred married Betty Popinga on November 30, 1951, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Tolley.  They purchased a farm in White Ash Township, Renville County, where they farmed and ranched for many years.
Fred was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Tolley, where he served as the financial secretary for many years, and served as the White Ash Township treasurer for 50+ years.  He was an amateur short-wave radio enthusiast for over 40 years, having contact with every country in the world except two.  His call sign was KBØNL.
Family: Fred is survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty Johnson, rural Carpio; children, Pauline Luther, Franklin, NC, Dwight Johnson, Williston, Tim (Kathy) Johnson, Hazen, Brian (Renee) Johnson, Minot, Perry (Kim) Johnson, Donnybrook; grandchildren, Nicole (Ross) Ford, Bismarck, Matthew Luther, Clearwater, FL, Anna (Steven) Polenski, Tampa, FL, Kelly (John) Myhra, Bismarck, Daniel Johnson, Minot, Rachel Johnson, Burlington, Andy Johnson, Donnybrook, Dillon Nelson, Bottineau; great-grandchildren, Cash and Lily Ford, Bismarck, Zoe Johnson, Minot; siblings, LaVerna Lawson, Bonnie (Donald) Murphy, LeRoy (Lorna) Johnson, Donna Schmalz, Kathryn (Roger) Murphy, all of Minot; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Fred was preceded in death by: Parents; son-in-law, Dennis Luther; father- and mother-in-law, Daniel and Grace Popinga; brothers-in-law, Ken Ofsthun, Fritz Wilhelm, Ben Schmalz and Casey Lawson.
Funeral: 1:00 p.m., Friday, May 29, 2020, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Minot.
Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation: 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 28, 2020, at Brose Funeral Home, Mohall.
Memorials: Memorials preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church, Tolley, or the American Heart Association.
