MOHALL – Gertrude Marie Strandberg, 94, Mohall, died Thursday, August 20, 2020, at a Velva care center.
She was born March 7, 1926, in Grano, to Gilbert and Edna (Mattern) Larson. She grew up in Loraine with her six brothers and sisters. She graduated from Lansford High School in 1943. She went on to some odd jobs house cleaning, and in 1944, she met the love of her life, George Strandberg. He had an ad in the paper looking for a housekeeper and once she started, she never left!
Gertrude and George were united in marriage November 18, 1944, in Mohall. She took on the typical farm life of cooking, cleaning and milking cows. In 1946, their first son, Ray, was born; he died of pneumonia within his first year of life. In 1947, their second son, Roger, was born; unfortunately, he died the same year, as well. The first few years they spent together were definitely not easy. Losing two children within two years of each other was devastating for them, but they had God with them along the way and it made them stronger.
They were blessed in 1948 when Gary was born. Then along came Olive, James, Kenny, then Steven. They had so much love for their children and gave them the best life they could. They were a happy couple with a great life together.
Gertrude's all-time favorite passion was cooking and being in the kitchen. She could literally make something out of nothing and it was always phenomenal. People would come around just in time for supper because they always knew she would have something delicious on the table. Hosting holidays, or just having the whole family over for a meal, wasn't a chore to her.
Anyone who met her was touched by her pure heart. She would always look for the best in people. No matter what she was doing, she would stop and help anyone in need. She was truly an amazing woman with a kind soul. On December 2, 2000, after 52 years together, the Lord called George home.
Gertrude had several interests including playing whist, rummy, or anything involving a deck of cards. She played many hours and won many games. If you played a game with her, you know she wasn't easy to beat. As cooking was her number-one passion, she won many Grand Championships over the years at the Renville County Fair. Whether it being her pies, bars, jams, or fresh-baked buns, you name it, she brought it.
She was a member of the Brandon Busy Bees which she was very involved with. She taught Sunday school for a few years and she tried to be active in the church anyway she could. On her birthday, she would invite friends over and they would play accordion, guitar and sing songs together. Lots of laughs were had with lots of memories made.
Gertrude's life revolved around her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. Family was everything to her. She lived life to the fullest and laughed as much as she could. God broke the mold when he made her; she was very unique and unforgettable. She will be deeply missed by all.
Gertrude loved her Lord Jesus, and today we are to celebrate the life she lived. So wipe your tears and remember the great memories she gave us, for she's at home with her Lord Jesus Christ and reunited with George and her family.
