Gladys Alma Abernathey, 99, Minot, formerly of Lansford, died, Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at her home in Minot, surrounded by loving family.
Gladys was born January 22, 1923, in Lansford, to Theodore and Alma A. (Wiese) Handeland. The family lived on a farm outside of Lansford and she graduated with honors from Lansford High School in 1943. During the war, Gladys went to Portland, OR, with two of her sisters to help with the WWII effort. After the war Gladys returned to North Dakota and became the teacher for children in grades 1 through 8 at Mount Rose School, a one-room schoolhouse.
She met a handsome young man who had recently returned from his U.S. Navy service during WWII. Norman Abernathey came to fix the school furnace and it was love at first sight. They married on June 16, 1947, and purchased a farm near Lansford. They farmed until they moved to Minot in 2008. They lived in their own home until 2018 when they moved to Edgewood Vista.
Gladys and Norman were married for 72 years and were known for their love and affection for each other. They loved to spent time at Lake Metigoshe with their family. With Gladys, there was always room for our friends and cousins to join too. They spent the winters for almost 30 years in Arizona and later on in California.
Gladys was very active in the Lansford community, serving as Treasurer for the Lutheran Church and Senior Group, Girl Scout Leader, Lutheran Ladies Aid, Mohall Senior Center, and countless bake sales for community projects.
