MOHALL - James Dean "Jim" Holsten, 62, Mohall, died Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at a Jamestown care center.
He was born February 1, 1961, in Bottineau, to John and Marvel (Monson) Holsten.
He was raised in rural Souris and graduated from Souris High School in 1979.
After graduating high school, Jim moved to Williston and started his career in the oilfield as a drill stem tester. He excelled in his profession and was offered a position in Mohall as a tester with MGM. A few years later, he worked with another tester named Jim at Virg's Testers resulting in him being known as Big Jim. In 1994, when he started his own testing company, it became BJ's Drill Stem Testing. This was the beginning of his long list of business partnerships which included Nordak Pump & Supply, Dakota Holdings, Green Ag Services, Drill Tech, Dakota Energy Services, Holsten-Welter Properties, and Grano Lakeside Lounge.
In the community, he was an active member and served on the Dakota West Credit Union Board, the Industrial Park Board and was also a Mouse River Loop Pheasant supporter. Bourgault Industries also acknowledged him with several Top Salesman Awards throughout the years.
Many would describe his personality as an air of confidence and his presence was always noticed. He was very well known due to his connections with the oil and ag equipment industries as well as being a local farmer. There were very few places that he walked into where someone didn't call him by name or become an acquaintance. He was proud to hold many titles throughout his life. To his family and friends in Souris, he was known as Jamie, but since then, his favorites have been Husband, Dad, and Papa Jim Jim.
On August 19, 1989, Jim was united in marriage to his wife of 33 years, Rhonda Yale. They raised their children, Dustin, Chase, Jason, Trey, and Jorie, and spent many years attending their school and church events. He also enjoyed hunting and farming with the boys, riding horse with his daughter, and spinning his wife around on the dance floor. Jim loved little kids, as many know, and when the grandkids - Huntley, Leni, Indy, Wilx and Sonny – arrived, his eyes would light up. He was so proud of his family.
Jim spent his summers at the lake on the pontoon, grilling meals, and sharing drinks on the deck with family and friends. During the winters, he enjoyed yearly family ski trips to the mountains. There were lots of lasting memories made on spring break cruise trips, visiting their Las Vegas home, and many other sunny vacation destinations.
In 2018, Jim was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD).
FTD "refers to a group of disorders caused by progressive nerve cell loss in the brain's frontal lobes or its temporal lobes."
The nerve cell damage caused by FTD causes deterioration in behavior, personality, and/or difficulty with producing or comprehending language.
As most saw over the last few years, this disease took away the Jim we all knew.
May we all find comfort in knowing he is in a better place, with his right state of mind again.
Jim will be always loved, never forgotten, and forever missed.
