MOHALL - Jodi Rae Johnson, 43, Mohall, died Thursday, November 2, 2023, at a Minot hospital.
She was born on November 15, 1979, in Mohall, to her parents, Jim and Jo Ann (Ring) Gehringer. She was raised in the Tolley, Mohall, and Grano areas along with her brother Jamie. She attended Mohall High School and was involved in basketball, volleyball, drama, and played trombone in the band. Throughout her teen years she worked as a lifeguard at the Mohall swimming pool, taught swimming lessons, and served as manager for a number of years. She graduated in 1998. She attended Minot State University and graduated in 2002 with a degree in elementary education. She coached the Mohall Yellowjacket volleyball team in 2001-2002.
On June 15, 2002, she married her high school sweetheart, Thurstan Johnson, in Mohall. It was a beautiful day with a wonderful celebration at the Mouse River Park. They spent their first year of marriage in Gackle, ND. Jodi taught the 2nd grade and was the volleyball coach for the Orioles, with Thurstan as her assistant, the start of many years of them sharing the sidelines together. They made some wonderful friendships while there.
The need to be closer to family and the farm brought them back to the Mohall area in 2003, where they purchased the former Clarence and Doris Lund farm west of Mohall. They began teaching in Westhope and shared their time between the farm and a home in Westhope. Jodi taught the third grade, and in later years, third and fourth grade combined. She coached the Pee Wee and Junior High girls' basketball teams and also assisted her husband coaching the Sioux girls' basketball team for three years. Jodi loved her Westhope/Newburg Sioux family, and her time there teaching, coaching, and nurturing those young ladies and gentlemen triggered the urge to become a mother.
In 2009, they moved to the farm permanently and Jodi concentrated on building a beautiful home for her future family. Aftan Rae was born June 8, 2010, Adlee Jeanette on October 2, 2012, and Anryn Jorine on November, 21, 2016. Jodi was a wonderful wife and mother. Her family was her number one priority. As her children grew, her role in the MLS school and community began to expand. She coached JH volleyball and helped lead a youth basketball program for the girls, coaching practices and games, and organizing travel teams to help build MLS women athletics. For the past four years, she has been the MLS Pee Wee basketball coach, having the opportunity to coach both Aftan and Adlee. She loved coaching the younger players and seeing the day to day improvement, the pure joy on a young girl's face when she scored a basket or made a great play. Her teams always had great success, whether they won or lost.
Jodi was a member of St. Jerome Catholic Church, Mohall, where she was the Faith Formation leader. She had a strong faith in God and did her best to help instill that faith in others. She was an avid lover of all animals, especially cats. She always looked forward to going outside at night to make sure all her pets were safe and well fed, sitting out in the dog shed and giving each one special attention. She had many fond memories of the Mouse River Park as a child, running around with her brother, and as an adult camping with her family. She was an avid kayaker and enjoyed the peaceful quiet going up river provided. She was able to enjoy many family vacations over the years, especially ones involving warm weather and a beach. She loved going on dates with her husband, especially to the Olive Branch just north of the border. She never turned down a pickle or a good book. She was always eager to babysit her nieces and nephews, no matter the time or place. She enjoyed the holidays and always decorated the house beautifully for the occasion. She loved wrapping gifts for her children and making their birthdays and holidays special.
