SHERWOOD - John Thomas Daeley, 77, of Sherwood, died Friday, October 23, 2026, at a Minot hospital, surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren, and brother and sister-in-law.
He was born October 5, 1949, in Kenmare, to Warren “Bud” and Florence (Bergerson) Daeley. He grew up on a farm west of Sherwood and attended and graduated from Sherwood High School in 1968. Throughout his high school years, he excelled at multiple sports.
After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and completed his basic training in San Diego, CA, and was part of Platoon 3062. He completed Advanced Infantry Training at Camp Pendleton, where he was stationed. As Private First Class, he was chosen to receive a Dress Blue Uniform, which was awarded by LEATHERNECK Magazine for the outstanding recruit in his platoon.
He became engaged to Jeanette “Nettie” Engh on February 2, 1970, upon his discharge. He returned to Sherwood in 1971 and married Nettie on May 29, 1971. John and Nettie had three children, Trichele Marie, Kristy Lee, and Justin John. John was a patient, loving father. He was their greatest sports fan and was able to coach Justin during his youth years. John had 10 grandchildren whom he loved very much. They each knew that if they needed anything, grandpa was the one to call.
John worked for Stanley Welding, numerous grain elevators, Johnson Oil, and Farmers Union Oil as a mechanic; he retired from there in 2015. Throughout John and Nettie’s life together, they loved to attend sporting events and were blessed to travel to Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii and numerous beautiful places with each other and family.
John was a member of the Sherwood Progressive Association, the North Dakota Judge’s Association. He was a volunteer fireman for many years. John was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church where he served as a board member for a time. John was a proud member of the Bothun-Peterson American Legion Post #213 since 1971 and was commander for several years. He served as 6th District commander as well as other offices. John was very active in the Legion Memorial Day services in Sherwood and had a distinguished presence with his “Oohrah” after the singing of the Marine’s Hymn.
