MOHALL – Kenneth "Ken" Ordell Haarsager, 69, rural Mohall, died Monday, August 30, 2021, at his home.
He was born September 21, 1951, in Mohall, to Conrad and Serine (Sundahl) Haarsager.  Ken's roots began and ended on his family farm northwest of Mohall in Hamlet Township, Renville County.  He was a third-generation farmer, the best dad, an amazing husband, and according to a few hats and coffee mugs, had also recently won a "Best Grandpa" award.
Ken was a proud graduate of Mohall High School's class of 1969.  He enjoyed football (Pittsburg Steelers), photography, painting, trap shooting, and tractor pulls.  He loved the Mouse River Park.  Ken earned his Associates in Electrical Technology degree at the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, in 1972.  After graduation, Ken and his cousin, Steve Sundahl, moved to Spokane, WA, and worked as electricians.  But his heart called him home a few years later to farm with his Dad and brother, Dale.
Ken and Dale were a notorious pair.  They were blessed to live and farm alongside each other most of their lives.  Ken and Dale may not have used the word "blessed," but there's no better word to describe their brotherhood.  You would rarely see one without the other.  It was not uncommon to find the two of them hard at work, bent over a piece of equipment, a doughnut (or two) in one hand, tools in the other, telling each other what to do while doing a job they loved so much.  They loved their family.  They loved their friends.  They loved their community.  And they loved getting them all together.  Holiday gatherings at the farm were something out of a Norwegian Thomas Kinkade painting, with a chance of explosions, and all were welcome.
Ken's proudest accomplishment was marrying his very own "Wildcat," Shanette (Brown) Haarsager, in 1979.  Ken and Shan were married 42 beautiful years.  Ken and Shan owned Pioneer Photo, his photography business for many years.  He enjoyed being behind a camera lens, capturing wildlife and documenting the lives of those he loved.  He had an eye for the beautiful moments in life, moments that will forever be held in our hearts.  Ken and Shan raised three girls, Stefanie, Kari, and Katie.  He was the best "Girl Dad" and taught his girls to work hard, be kind, and how to eat a cookie with no hands.
Ken was an advocate for farming and agriculture which took him on several trips to Washington, D.C., to lobby Congress.  He was actively involved with Mouse River Loop Pheasants, Mohall Jaycees, and the Mohall Gun Club.  He dedicated time on the boards of the Renville County Farmers Union, Renville Bottineau Ag Improvement Association, North Central Electric Cooperative (21 years – 1996-2017), Upper Souris Water Users Association, Farmers Union Oil Company of Mohall, and many others that his family likely did not know about due to his humble heart.  Ken wasn't one to boast about the work he did for his vocation and his community.
Haarsagers always keep their fork for dessert, because the best is yet to come. We pray for your peace and joy, and know you are savoring the sweeter side of life reuniting with Conrad, Serine, Dale and your family and friends on the other side.  We love you.  We miss you.  We are so unbelievably proud of you.
