MOHALL – Kenneth Robert Melin, 68, Mohall, died Sunday, September 17, 2023, at a Mohall nursing home.
He was born August 18, 1955, in Kenmare, to Robert and Arvilla (Keith) Melin.  He attended Mohall Public School.  He received special education services in Mohall and Sherwood before transferring to Minot Public School. He graduated from Minot High School in 1974.  While attending school in Minot, he stayed at the Frank and Elizabeth Taylor home.  They were very caring substitute parents to Kenny.
In 1976, Kenny was accepted into a vocational program through the Fargo Public School system.  After graduating in 1977, he entered a pilot program to help special needs individuals find work.  He was hired by GPK and would work there for over 18 years.  He won several company awards there.
While living in Fargo, he was very active in the Island Park Center and did many ceramic pieces for family and friends.  He also became very active in Special Olympics during this time.  Kenny went on to win many awards and medals.  He competed at the national level and took second place in a running event.  He especially enjoyed meeting Marlo Thomas, Phil Donahue and the Shriver-Kennedy family.  He would later compete in basketball, bowling and pool.  If you have never attended a Special Olympic event, you should.  Their courage, determination and amazing talents will touch your heart.
Kenny returned to Mohall to be closer to his family.  He began working with the Minot Vocational Workshop, now known as Kalix.  He worked at Pizza Hut, Kalix laundry and many years at the Air Force Base Commissary.  Following his retirement, he moved to the Good Samaritan Home in Mohall.
Kenny was an avid NASCAR fan.  His favorites were Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr.  He attended several races over the years and loved to hear, "Gentlemen, start your engines!"  He was a Vikings and Twins fan, attending many games.  He loved traveling, All-Star wrestling and country music.  Listening to Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and watching the Dukes of Hazzard made for a good day.  Kenny faced many challenges over the years but he had a rich, full life.  He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Family:  Mother, Arvilla Melin, Mohall; sisters, Susan Mathiason, Minot, and Carol (Don) Mohagen, Minot; brother, Daniel (Susie) Melin, Mohall; aunt, Ellie Bredahl, Stanley; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
