SHERWOOD - Lola Marie (Lynnes) Hanson, 87, Fargo, formerly of Sherwood, died Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at a Fargo nursing home.
She was born on June 1, 1934, in Rolette, to John and Marie (Brattrud) Lynnes, descendants of hardy Norwegians.  She was raised on a farm outside of Rolette and belonged to the Ox Creek Lutheran Church, rural Rolette, where she was baptized and confirmed.  She was the second-oldest of ten children and spent much of her youth helping with the younger kids while her mother was in the fields.
Lola attended her first eight years of school at a rural country schoolhouse.  While attending Rolette High School, she lived with her Uncle Kirk and Aunt Pauline in town.  During this time, she also had her first formal job at the local department/grocery store.  Normally the customer handed their shopping list to Lola, and she gathered all the items for them.  Many customers were not happy when the owner bought shopping carts since Lola had to teach them how to use them and pick out all their own items.
Lola attended Minot State Teaching School and completed the two-year diploma program.  Lola held several teaching jobs, in rural Rolette and in Seattle, WA, for a few years.  Her younger sister, Jeanine, convinced her to move back to North Dakota and become a teacher with South Prosperity School outside Sherwood, close to her.  Rumor has it that the Lynnes sisters attended a Friday night dance in Antler, and this is where Lola first met Orlin "Bill" Hanson.
Lola and Bill were married on October 5, 1958, at Prosperity Lutheran Church.  Two grain bins were put together to make their first home on the Hanson Homestead just south of Bill's parents' house.  All three children, Dorea (Dee), Stan and Shawn, were born while they lived in their first home.  Shortly after Shawn's birth, and the passing of Bill's father, they moved into the original home with his mother.  In 1968, they built a new home, and this was the first time they had an indoor bathroom.  Bill and Lola were active in farming and ranching until selling the farm in 2000.
Lola was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Sherwood, for 50 years, teaching Sunday school, participating in Ladies Aid, and serving on the church council.  Bill and Lola rarely missed a Church service, in the 4 th row, and directly in front of the pastor.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 63 years.  Lola was very active member helping to organize the annual Legion Fall Supper and Dance and the annual Memorial Day activities, including the city-wide lunch provided by the auxiliary.
She was a member of the North Dakota Stockmen's Association Women's Group and attended annual conventions with her family.  She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and supported their efforts.  She was an active member of the local sewing club, where decks of cards and wine were on the table instead of fabric and needles.
When Bill decided to run for the North Dakota House of Representative in 1980, Lola became a true partner and assistant of a Representative.  She campaigned with Bill and would spend January to April every other year living in Bismarck during the week, giving tours to constituents and keeping Bill organized.  She would then come home over the weekend, cook and clean for her family and head back Sunday night.  She attended many State and National Republican conventions.  Lola had strong conservative beliefs like her husband and was never shy to share her thoughts.
Lola was known for her cooking and opening her home at any time for family gatherings.  She could make food for five, stretch to 15, whenever Bill brought home extra hunters to feed.  She loved supporting Camp Metigoshe where her three children attended Bible Camp every summer and where her Godson, Marsh Drege, was Pastor.  She rarely missed a sporting event, concert, play, musical, confirmation or wedding of her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Lola and Bill moved from Sherwood to Fargo in December 2011, into Bethany Senior Living.  Bill passed in October of 2012, and she would spend the next nine years becoming friends with residents and staff, playing cards in several card groups, running to Bingo whenever it was called, looking out for anyone that she thought needing looking after, and visiting with anyone that would stop and say Hi!  She enjoyed being so close to grandchildren events and loved going to her children's homes for meals and family time.
Lola had a big heart, was always willing to help, and loved to visit. She will be missed!
