MANFRED - Margaret “Peggy” Sprague, 96, formerly of Manfred, died Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at a Velva care center.
Margaret Ellanora Renden was born February 7, 1930, in Manfred, to Jens and Marie (nee Hedahl) Renden. Peggy attended school through the 8th grade in Manfred and 9th grade in Fessenden. She was unwell due to toxic goiter and spent several weeks in the hospital and undergoing treatments, including radio isotope radiation, which left her weak. Following her freshman year in high school, Peggy returned home to live with her mother.
After regaining her strength, Peggy moved to Bismarck and worked as a clerk at Robertson’s dress store with her sister Marian. Peggy kindly sent letters to a serviceman, Paul Sprague, as a pen pal. Paul visited Peggy once in Manfred. He surprised her in 1960 by sending her an engagement ring in the mail!
They were married in October of 1961 in Marian’s home in Bismarck. They made their home in White River Junction, VT, Paul’s home area. Peggy and Paul had two sons, William “Billy,” and Peter.
As well as being a devoted wife and mother, Peggy was a member of the Methodist church. She sang soprano in the choir as well as lending her beautiful voice to solos. Peggy also worked in the school cafeteria for 24 years, which fit in well with her cooking talents. She spent years trying to introduce her Norwegian heritage baking to Vermonters. She gave up trying to make them understand Krumkake, Sandbakkels, and Lefse, but mastered pies, especially Lemon Meringue!
Paul died in 1991, and her son, Peter, in 2006. Shortly after, Peggy returned to North Dakota to live in Mohall where her niece, Judy Duerre, and nephew, John Cook, lived. She continued to sing in church and at the Good Samaritan Nursing home. In 2023, she moved to Souris Valley Care Center in Velva where she resided until her death on April 28, 2026.
Peggy will be remembered for her kindness, her beautiful soprano voice, especially in duets with her sister, Dolores, and her baking talents.
Family: Peggy is survived by her son, Billy; sister-in-law, Pat Sprague; special niece, Judy Duerre, as well as other nieces and nephews.
Peggy was preceded in death by: Her parents, Jens and Marie; brothers, Charles and Wilbur Peterson; sisters, Marian Cook, Norma Cook, Dolores Renden, Dolly Marty and Johanna Renden; husband, Paul; son, Billy; and sister-in-law, Velma Sprague.
Graveside Service: 11:30 a.m., Monday, May 4, 2026, at Vang Lutheran Cemetery, Manfred.
