SHERWOOD – Marian Janet Morris, 91, Sherwood, formerly of Tolley, died Sunday, November 29, 2020, at a Minot hospital.
She was born April 6, 1929, to Peder and Bothilda (Christiansen) Pederson, near the rim of Horseshoe Canyon, near Drumheller, Alberta, Canada.
She attended a rural school and later a school in Rosebud, Alberta. The family moved to the United States in 1943 and settled southwest of Mohall. Marian worked at The Dutch Mill in Minot. She met the love of her life, Truman Morris at Mouse River Park, rural Tolley. They enjoyed dances and going to the movies.
Marian and Truman were united in marriage on March 28, 1949, at the Methodist Church in Tolley. They made their home near Tolley on the Morris farm with Hattie and sister, Sava. They were blessed with seven children. Truman died July 11, 1968. Marian continued to live on the farm raising her family and saw that they received an education. Her son, Tim, also farmed with her.
Marian enjoyed gardening, growing flowers (especially gladiolas), she loved to embroider and knit in the evenings to pass the time and gifted many tablecloths, dish towels and pillowcases. She found great joy in berry-picking, making jams and jellies, canning garden produce and sharing with others the fruits of her labor.
Marian was a member of the Sherwood United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, served as clerk for the Grover Township Board. She served as secretary/treasurer for the McKinney Cemetery Board for many years; when she turned 80, she said, "It was long enough; time to let someone else take over!"
Her letter writing was not a lost art for her and she enjoyed hearing back from others who continued to do the same. She loved to decorate and cook for the holidays and made meals fit for a king. If you were working at the farm, a tasty meal was prepared for you.
Marian was adamant about the spelling of her first name. She wasn't shy about correcting you if you spelled her name with an "o" instead of an "a"! Marian was very proud of her centennial farm and was honored to receive the Pioneer Award from the Renville-Bottineau Agricultural Improvement Association. Due to health concerns at the age of 85, Marian moved to an apartment in Sherwood.
