MOHALL - Mark Dennis Stromswold, 66, Mohall, died Sunday, February 7, 2021, at a Minot hospital.
He was born on October 16, 1954, to Wesley and Ellen (Skordal) Stromswold, in Grand Forks. Mark attended country school near Larimore in the fall of 1960.  That year, Wesley and Ellen returned with the three youngest children to Mohall to farm.  Mark graduated from Mohall High School in 1972.  Most of Mark's favorite memories from high school are from playing center on the number 1 rated football team in North Dakota in his senior year.  His infectious giggle kicked in when he reminisced with his team mates every time they got together.
Mark attended North Dakota State College of Science.  In 1974, he married Kimberly Wherley.  They welcomed two sons, Shay and Kyle, into their family.  He was extremely proud of his family.  Becoming a grandfather topped it all off.  Madi and Ashton were the apple of his eye.  In 1997, Mark married Sonja Duerre.
Like many young men who were raised on the family farm, Mark had many talents he gleaned from his father and the many jobs he held over the years.  He farmed with his dad and later on his own.  During the oil boom in the 1980s, he worked in the oil field.  He gained electrical knowledge while working for Roughrider Electric.  He poured concrete for many years.  For several years, Mark owned NAPA Auto Parts in Mohall.  He enjoyed a stint as a welder.  His most fulfilling job was negotiating leases as a landman for Empire Oil Company.  When he was able to take a big lease check to a landowner who had always just scraped by, it made his heart happy.  He always said the only thing better would have been if it was his own money he was sharing.  When the boom was over, Mark became a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.
Mark always loved horses, raising foals, riding, roping, and teaching others about basic horsemanship.  Over the years he owned three stallions, always improving his genetics as he purchased stallions and mares.  He loved having his horses shown and was especially proud of Hickota, who earned two qualifications for the AQHA World Show in Reining and Working Cow.  He also enjoyed his trips to the big ranches in Texas, completing his bucket list of owning a mare from each of four of the oldest ranches in Texas.  He looked forward to each of the horsemanship and working cow clinics he and Soni hosted at the Quarter Circle S Ranch.
One of Mark's passions was spending time at the Mouse River Park creating a home-away-from-home on the lot that his grandfather originally purchased.  Many days were spent entertaining family and friends and enjoying time with the grandchildren.
Mark served on the Mohall School Board, the Renville County Fair Board, and he was the Renville County Weed Control Officer.
Family: Mark is survived by his wife of 23 years, Sonja; his sons, Shay (Heidi) Stromswold, Minot, and Kyle Stromswold, Mohall; his sisters, Shirley Middleton, Roseberg, OR, Janet Ward, Byhalia, MS, and Diane (Dan) Witteman, Mohall; and his brother, Loren (Jeanie) Stromswold, Mohall; grandchildren, Madison and Ashton, both of Minot; mother-in-law, Judy Duerre, Mohall; his rent-a-kid, Kaitlin (Kurtis) Sisk, Mohall; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mark was preceded in death by: his parents; his brother, Omund Stromswold; brothers-in-law, George Ward and Nathan Duerre.
