Ruth Ann Crome was born on Sept 13, 1929, in Albion, IL, to Alan and Ella (Jennings) Crome. She mentioned that it was Friday the 13
th
the year she was born, so she never believed that that was an unlucky day. Ruth had an older brother, George, twin sisters, Eva and Evelyn, and younger brothers, Keith and Richard.
Ruth married Bert J. Michels, of Ellery, IL, while he was serving in the Army in Washington DC at the end of WWII. Upon his discharge, they returned to Albion where they started their family. Oldest son, Robert, was born in 1948, Stanton in 1951 and Jeffery in 1954. In 1955, Ruth and Bert moved to North Dakota when Bert's employer, Calvert Oil Drilling, transferred them from Albion to Bottineau. They lived in Bottineau until 1959 and had two more children, Rebecca Lynn in 1955 and Bradley in 1958.
For the next 60 years, Ruth would spend her life in service to the greatest joy in her life, her five children, 12 grandchildren and an ever-increasing number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Ruth always had an open door to family and friends and made their happiness her life's work.
On her 80
th
birthday, her family gathered in celebration and wrote about their feelings for Ruth. The stories told by her children and grandchildren reflect who she was and how much she will be missed. Bert died December 3, 2020.
Granddaughter Lindsey wrote: "
I just knew Grandma's was the place to be. Even now on my visits back, I cannot wait to come over for a visit. Listening to you and Grandpa tell stories really is my favorite thing. You attract people with your patience, humility, and nurturing. You are someone who has not only left a mark in many of our lives, but truly helped shape who we are."
Grandson Brian wrote: "
I think the underlying theme to all of my memories, of time with Grandma, is that she is the most caring and giving person I have ever met. I have told myself many times, over the years, that I need to be more like her."
