IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sara Jane
(Gilbraith) Volk
November 20, 1956 – September 25, 2020
Sara Jane (Gilbraith) Volk, 63, Sherwood, died Friday, September 25, 2020, at a Minot nursing home.
Sara Jane was born on November 20, 1956, in Mohall, to Leslie and Hazel (Lewis) Gilbraith. During Sara's youth, the Gilbraith family lived in Loraine and Sara attended school in Mohall. In the summer of 1973, the family moved north, to the Axel Carlson farm east of Sherwood. That fall Sara began attending Sherwood High School.
Sara's intelligence, kindness, and sense of humor drew people to her. Sara made many lifelong friends during her education at Sherwood High School and at North Dakota State University. Sara impacted many lives during her time spent working at the Grafton State School, both the residents there and her nieces and nephews living in Grafton. Sara resigned in 1996 and returned to Sherwood to live with her father, Les, on the farm. Sara married David Volk in 2001.
Sara took this opportunity to get to know her four youngest nieces and nephews, often serving as the silver fairy taxi service. Sara never had children of her own, but showed an extraordinary amount of love to all of her nieces and nephews. She was never afraid to say, "I'm proud of you."
Sara always had a genuine love of animals, and when she moved into town approximately 20 years ago she became the savior of Sherwood's feline population. Sometimes to her neighbor's dismay, Sara made sure the stray cats were fed, abandoned kittens were rescued, and adults were fixed. Sara had a wide network of friends she met online through cat and dog rescue groups. She would often work to facilitate the transport of an animal to a forever home. Sara found true joy in helping animals.
Sara was passionate about her beliefs. She had unyielding faith in the Democratic Party and often spoke eloquently and loudly on her political views. Sara had a beautiful singing voice, which she didn't use nearly enough. Sara's favorite hobby was quilting. Over the years she has made many beautiful quilts, donating several to charity.
Family:
Sara leaves many friends and family to mourn, including siblings, Vance (Debbie) Gilbraith, Kathy Andreson, Robin (David) Stark, and Scott (Shauna) Gilbraith; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Sara will be joining a large family that went before her, including her parents; Les and Hazel; infant brothers, Michael and Jeffrey; sister, Sandy; and grandparents, Howard and Mary Alice (Swain) Gilbraith, and William Walter and Sarah (Cruikshank) Lewis.
On September 25, 2020 Sara passed away after a long battle with multiple health problems. Sara requested there be no service and that her remains be cremated. A graveside service will be held to lay Sara's remains to rest beside her parents. A date has yet to be determined. Sara's family asks that all memorials be sent to the Domestic Violence Crisis Center in Minot.
