Sidney "Sid" Olson, 85, Minot, formerly of Mohall, died Monday, June 26, 2023, at his home.
He was born August 14, 1937, near Mohall, on the Monrad Ness farm, to Selmer and Alice (Ness) Olson.  He was one of five siblings:  Marion, Corynne, Rikka and Christine, with Sidney in between.  He was raised on the farm in Hamlet Township and graduated from Mohall High School in 1955.
He attended North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo.  He was selected to a farm youth exchange to England, then he returned to NDAC, which was renamed NDSU.
In 1958, he attended a wedding in Cleveland, OH, and a year later, the bride's sister, Peg Dailey, became Sid's wife on October 3, 1959.  He worked for Fairmont Foods in Cleveland for several winters when first married.  Together, they farmed in Hamlet Township for 60 years and raised their three children, Cheryl, Bonnie and Steve.
Sid was a member of the United Methodist Church, Mohall, until it closed; he was chairman of the church council from 1988 to 1990.  He was a current member of Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall.  Over the years, Sid had visited many places and touched many lives.  Some of the organizations that he was involved with include State FFA officer in 1954, a member of a new farm organization, "NFO" National Farm Organization where he served as its first president.  He served on the Mohall School Board from 1978 to 1981; was inducted into the NDSU Harvest Bowl in 1972, which was the first year of the Harvest Bowl awards; served on the North Central Electric Board for 24 years, from 1972 to 1996, and served 14 years as the board chairman; served on the North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperative "NDAREC," in Mandan for 20 years, 1976 to 1996, as was the chairman for two years; served on the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association "NRECA" for ten years and was the chairman of the legislative committee for four years, served on the National Farmers Union Insurance Board from 1986 to 1993; served on the Quentin Burdick Center of Cooperative Education as chairman, they raised $900,000 to be used as an endowment fund to support a department of cooperative education; served on the Renville County School Redistricting Board for 14 years, from 1993 to 2007; served on the Rockin' the Hill board, was a member of Farmers Union and held various offices at the local level, and also served on the Renville-Bottineau Agriculture Improvement board.
Sid and his family saw the importance of keeping the extended family together.  He and his sisters went together and purchased land for a lake cabin at Lake Metigoshe where they all could gather.  Last summer, the family dedicated a flag, and buried a time capsule, to honor 50 years of being together as a family.
Sid had a commitment to always being busy.  He often said, "Always do something, even if it's wrong" and "If you're not working, act busy."  Lunch was always at 12-noon, usually prepared by Peg whether in the field or at the farm.  If Sid cooked, it was Dinty Moore Stew in the can.  Sid enjoyed hunting and fishing, bending arms, a good debate and playing Trivial Pursuit.
